More about Szczecin
Szczecin is a metropolitan county, the capital and largest city in the Western Pomeranian voivodship. Szczecin is one of Poland’s oldest and largest cities, and with its large number of historical buildings, events, theatres, museums and cultural centres, it has plenty to offer tourists.
The city lies on the European Route of Brick Gothic, which showcases the continent’s best examples of brick Gothic architecture. You can follow a section of it by taking the City Tourist Route, which takes you to 42 of the city’s most interesting sights.
Other places well worth visiting are the world’s oldest cinema, the Pioneer, which has been in constant operation since 1909, Café 22 (located on the 22nd floor, and Szczecin’s highest viewing point), from where you have a beautiful panoramic view over the whole of the city, or the river Oder, on which you can take a leisurely pleasure cruise. While you’re there, a unique addition to your trip is a visit to the Ladoga Cruise Ship, where you can try excellent eastern European and Baltic cuisine based on traditional recipes, or if you prefer to see the city from above, why not take a balloon trip over Jasne Blonia, known as the city’s green lungs. Szczecin’s unique atmosphere comes from both the radial layout of its streets, based on those of Paris, and its extensive green spaces.
